Who are capuchins? They are people who are highly motivated by the St. Francis of Assisi and who care very much for the poor and orphans. Capuchin soup kitchen is the only place that serves hundreds of needy people by offering free food. In this organization, the need for food is given special importance since it is the most basic need of every human. It is a religious society which cares and work for the poor people and their belief system is serving the poor is equal to serving the God. There is always something left for the poor and needy people in the society. This group was established 800 years ago and even now Capuchins are following the tradition of Francis of Assisi.
In the Capuchin soup kitchen you can find volunteers pray, preach and care for the poor people and those who are orphaned at young age. They conduct group prayers in schools, colleges, hospitals and in parishes. You can find number of workers who have excelled in fields like farming, teaching, cooking, counseling and drawing. Some of the volunteers who work in the Capuchin soup kitchen are mechanical engineers and some others are artists and you can also find writers in that group. According to Capuchins, all the people are equal in Godâ€™s creation and something is restored for every human being at this shelter.
The Capuchin soup kitchen was established in Detroit initially and now there are several branches in the states of Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Montana, Illinois, Arizona, Panama and California. The community of Capuchins is highly motivated by the Francis of Assisi and his prayers. Apart from providing food for the poor, the volunteers also assist in encouraging the spirit and self esteem of the people and strive for eliminating the social injustice prevailing in the society. The philosophy of Capuchin originates from the Franciscan tradition. The association receives solid support from people of many walks of life and thus the Capuchin soup kitchen was able to rightly serve the needy people of Detroit.
The unit of Capuchin soup kitchen serves around 2000 people each day by offering meals. According to the fact sheet available in this society, this kitchen feeds about 300,000 pounds of food each month. In addition, they also collect and distribute clothing and furniture for the poor people. Approximately, the Capuchin soup kitchen provides meals for 500,000 people every year. Of course, this community receives donation from many sources and it is not an overstatement to say that more than 80% of the fund is utilized for serving the poor.
Capuchin soup kitchen also has a special organization named as House of Peace which offers emergency food for households, apart from providing clothing. It also assists in offering free medical service for needy people and free legal consultation in association with Marquette University of law school. In addition another unit by name Earth works also functions effectively from the society of the Capuchin soup kitchen which helps infants, children and women. It organizes food workshops and educates the people of growing organic food. It houses an extensive farmhouse in which roughly 10,000 pounds of vegetables and fruits are cultivated each month.
